Hebrew Blessings

Hebrew blessings are beautiful and, quite often, poetic. I do not believe that any of these blessings are required for salvation. I do them because I choose to. I love the language and learning it is such a treat and a priviledge. For me, committing these and other common blessings to memory and, more importantly, to heart is just one of the ways I show G-d my dedication to, and love for, Him.

Below are the transliteration and translation of some common Hebraic blessings.

Before reading Torah:English Transliteration: Barukh atah Adonai Eloheinu, melekh ha’olam asher barcha banu mikkol ha’amim venatan lanu et torato. Barukh atah Adonai notein ha’torah.

English Translation: Blessed are You, LORD our God, king of the universe, who chose us from all the peoples and gave to us His Torah. Blessed are You, LORD, giver of the Torah.

After reading Torah:English Transliteration: Barukh atah Adonai Eloheinu, melekh ha’olam asher natan lanu torat emet vechaiyei olam nata’ betokeinu. Barukh atah Adonai notein hatorah.

English Translation: Blessed are You, LORD our God, king of the universe, who gave us the Torah of truth and set everlasting life in our midst. Blessed are You, LORD, giver of the Torah.

Before reading Haftarah:English Transliteration: Barukh attah Adonai eloheinu melekh ha’olam asher bachar binvi’im tovim ve-ratzah ve-divreihem hane’emarim be’emet. Barukh attah Adonai ha-bocher ba-torah uv’Moshe avdo uv-Yisra’el amo, uvinvi’ey ha-emet va-tzedek

English Translation: Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the Universe, who has chosen good prophets and was pleased with their words that were uttered with truth. Blessed are You, Adonai, who chooses the Torah and Moses, God’s servant, and Israel, God’s people, and the prophets of truth and righteousness.

After reading Haftarah:English Transliteration: Barukh attah Adonai eloheinu melekh ha’olam, kol tzur ha-olamim, tzaddik b’khol ha-dorot, ha-El hane’eman ha’omeir v’oseh, hamdabeir u’makiyem, shekol devarav emet ve-tzedek. Ne’eman attah Adonai eloheinu, ve-ne’emanim devarekha, ve-davar echad midevareykha achor lo yashuv reikam, ki El melekh ne’eman ve-rachaman attah. Barukh attah Adonai, ha-El hane’eman be-khol devarav

English Translation: Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the Universe, rock of all eternities, righteous in all generations, the faithful God, who says and does, who speaks and fulfills, all of whose words are true. Faithful are you, LORD our God, and faithful are your words. Not one of your words turns back unfulfilled, for You, O God, are a faithful and compassionate King. Blessed are You, LORD, the God who is faithful in all His words.

Before reading B’rit Chadashah:English Transliteration: Barukh attah Adonai eloheinu melekh ha-olam, asher natan lanu Mashiach Yeshua ve-hadiberot shel ha-berit chadashah. Barukh attah Adonai, notein ha-berit ha-chadashah.

English Translation: Blessed are You, LORD our God, King of the universe, Who gave to us the Messiah Yeshua and the commandments of the Renewed Covenant. Blessed art You, LORD, Giver of the Renewed Covenant.

After reading B’rit Chadashah:English Transliteration: Barukh attah Adonai eloheinu melekh ha-olam, asher natan lanu ha-devar ha’emet ve-chayei olam nata betokheinu. Barukh attah Adonai, notein ha-berit ha-chadashah.

English Translation: Blessed are You, LORD our God, King of the universe, Who gave to us the Word of Truth and planted everlasting life in our midst. Blessed are You, LORD, Giver of the Renewed Covenant.

Blessing over Bread called Hamotzi:English Transliteration: Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha-olam, ha-motzi lehem min ha-aretz.

English Translation: Blessed are you, LORD, our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.

Blessing over Wine called Kiddush:English Transliteration: Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha-olam, bo’re p’ri ha-gafen.

English Translation: Blessed are You, LORD, our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.

Shabbat Candle Blessing:English Transliteration: Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik ner shel shabbat.

English Translation: Blessed are You, Lord, our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to light the Shabbat candles.

Communal Blessing for Food:English Transliteration: Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha-olam, bo’re miney m’zunot.

English Translation: Blessed are You, LORD, our God, King of the universe, who creates varieties of nourishment.

Upon waking upEnglish Transliteration: Modeh ani lifanekha melekh hai v’kayam shehehezarta bi nishmahti b’hemla, raba emunatekha.

English Translation: I give thanks before You, Living and Eternal King, that You have returned within me my soul with compassion; [how] abundant is Your faithfulness!

Washing of HandsEnglish Transliteration: Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu al n’tilat yadayim.

English Translation: Blessed are you, LORD, our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us concerning washing of hands.
